Sustainable And Responsible
We are seriously committed to managing our resources responsibly now and into the future and we are constantly innovating to improve the way we design and operate our data centres. That means we are always looking at new ways to optimise energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and cut waste.
What have we done so far?
- We maximise our use of power, space and cooling systems through modular design, which lets us build large systems from smaller sub-systems
- We continue to improve our power usage effectiveness (PUE) through the application of smart design, procurement and operational measures and we offer our customers individual power metering as standard
- We use free cooling wherever we can and recycle waste heat for other purposes
- And we work with Myclimate to offer independent carbon-neutral accreditation to all of our customers in Switzerland
To share our sustainability expertise more widely, we are co-founders of the EMEA Chapter of the Uptime Institute. We sit on the Tech Committee and the Advisory Council of The Green Grid, the leading energy-efficiency and sustainability association for the data centre industry, as well as the EC Joint Research Centre on Sustainability. We’ve also won Green IT’s award for IT Operator of the year.
Balancing Capacity And Load
We pioneered modular design in 2000, and we’ve been refining it ever since. It’s a great way to match the IT capacity that’s installed with the IT load, enabling us to achieve lower start-up Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
Efficient Power Usage
We’ve been improving our PUE every year since 2003, so it’s no wonder our efficiency is now exceptional. Let us know if you’d like details.
Approximately 75% of our power comes from sustainable sources, including water, sun and wind.
Recycling Waste Heat
We use closed-loop design to recycle and re-use waste heat.
We’ve been using natural cooling techniques such as seawater cooling to keep our data centres operational since 2009.
Our new builds have free cooling, using ambient air temperatures to keep facilities cool, built in – and have done so since 2006.
Cold Aisle Containment
We use self-closing mechanical doors and automatic self-venting roof panels in custom cooling solutions that mean our facilities can support high-load IT cabinets on low raised floors more efficiently.
Hot Aisle Containment
To optimise energy use of high-density IT loads, we isolate hot air and feed it to air conditioners, creating highly efficient closed systems.
Efficiency Through Variable Frequency Drives
By putting variable frequency drives into the pumps, chillers and fans in our air conditioning and ventilation systems, we’re making them more efficient.
Calculating For Effectiveness
The latest computational fluid dynamics software enables us to maximise facility efficiency while meeting your power and cooling requirements.
To keep lighting power consumption to a minimum we have begun to install low-energy, long-life compact fluorescent tubes with motion detectors in our facilities and offices.
