Emerging Technologies will reach new levels of maturity in 2020

By: William Fenick, VP Enterprise, Interxion

Enterprises are adopting new technologies in an accelerated manner. Of these new technologies, the cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), seem to be garnering the most attention, with many enterprises devising a technology strategy to incorporate all three.

If we take a step back, all enterprises undertake initiatives to fulfill certain requirements that they believe will help them gain a competitive edge. Whether that is improving customer service, reducing costs, mitigating risks or a combination of these, they’re looking to tap new technologies to help assist with these goals.

Considering how quickly the cloud, IoT and AI are being adopted, the need for them to develop at an accelerated rate is critical. As such, I expect the new decade to usher in new levels of maturity for each of these technologies.

Cloud has gained trust and will only continue to improve

It is now apparent to most enterprises that the cloud can increase their ability to fulfill performance, cost savings and flexibility goals, in addition to data security regulation requirements. In fact, not only has cloud security itself become much stronger, it also allows data residency to be well known and its stability is strong. Slowly enterprises are seeing their peers and competitors getting an edge which is forcing them to make the jump as well.

To meet this migration demand, many internet service providers have come on to the scene to help the migration and orchestration of enterprises’ workloads to the cloud. This is just one example that proves that multiple millions of dollars are being invested into the industry, which will only allow for further continued improvements for the technology.

IoT is increasing customer satisfaction and decreasing costs

Customers are the life-blood of any organisation and the ability to engage them on multiple levels is important. In efforts to make life more convenient, IoT, an ever-increasing number of connected devices, has revolutionised customer experience. Further, with geo-location becoming even more prevalent, due to chips being inserted into all objects, businesses will be able to mitigate risks and make more cost-efficient decisions.

Because of these benefits, enterprises are adopting IoT at an increasing rate and with 5g networks looming, we know the technology will be further embraced by businesses across all industries.

AI is the juggernaut of the next decade

AI adoption is taking off across Europe, as the technology has become the game changer in highly competitive markets including financial services, healthcare, retail, media and entertainment, manufacturing and automotive industries.

Between the potential of its preventive maintenance, improved customer service and quality insurance testing capabilities, business that don’t leverage artificial intelligence will soon be left behind.

With the advancements of these technologies, most organisations are realising that sitting back and watching from the sidelines is something that they cannot afford. However, at the same time, they’re recognising that their existing enterprise data centres can no longer support these technologies. As a result, we can expect to see a follow-on shift toward IT infrastructures that can provide high performant, secure and cost effective interconnections to the cloud and connectivity providers that will help businesses each meet their unique needs.
